The Ottawa Muslim Cemetery Inc. (OMC) was incorporated as a non-profit, charitable organization (Charitable Registration No.  894375187RRr0001), to establish a cemetery for the Muslim community in the Ottawa-Gatineau region and to provide a means for the Muslim community to follow the requirements of Islamic funeral observances.

In 1994 work began to establish the first Muslim cemetery in the Nation's Capital.

There is a wide range of Muslim institutions now in the Nations Capital. However, after 100 years of Muslim presence in the Ottawa area, there is finally a Muslim cemetery that is owned and operated by the Muslim community and which will meet the unique needs based on Islamic principles and values.

As our community continues to grow and age, the need for a Muslim Cemetery to compliment the already existing washing facilities at the mosques becomes a priority to ensure that the Islamic traditions of burial are preserved for our families now and in the future.

Over the years there have been events to promote and raise funds for the project. It has been a challenge not only to find an appropriate plot of land for the cemetery but also to raise sufficient funds to complete the project

The OMC was active in searching for an appropriate piece of land that meets the requirements for a cemetery in accordance with the Cemeteries Act of Ontario and local zoning and environmental requirements.  Over 160 sites were considered but it was difficult to meet the soil conditions, environmental tests, and zoning requirements for a cemetery in the Ottawa area. The stringent requirements reduced the choice of potential sites around Ottawa.  The eastern part of the city has high water level, and the western part is rocky.

Finally in 2005 an appropriate section of land was acquired by the OMC and subsequent development work was done to obtain a cemetery licence and prepare the property to be used as a cemetery.  The cemetery land is thirty acres and 13.5 acres are being developed which will serve the Muslim community for many generations to come.

The Muslim community has been very patient in waiting for the development of this project.  The long-term objective of this Cemetery project is for the Muslim community to establish, manage, and control all aspects of its funeral arrangements. With a Muslim population of 80,000 to 100,000 and growing in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, the Muslim cemetery is finally here.
